Meet Kalinie

My story

These early experiences grounded me in a “back to basics” approach to food: using natural, alive, high-quality ingredients to nourish the body and spirit.

Over the years, I’ve been recreating my mother’s authentic Guyanese recipes with a healthy twist—modifying ingredients to support vegan and vegetarian diets without sacrificing flavour. It’s my way of carrying forward tradition while adapting it for our evolving wellness needs.

Guyana is a land of rich cultural heritage, and its diverse culinary flavours are rooted in the traditions of six distinct nations. My cooking is a reflection of this vibrant tapestry—a proud celebration of my Guyanese roots.

I spent part of my childhood in Pomeroon, Essequibo, on my Nanie and Nana's farm. Life there was transformative. I learned the value of the farm-to-table lifestyle—simple, fresh, and nourishing. It deeply reinforced my dad’s mantra: “If you don’t spend the money to eat properly, you’ll spend it in the doctor’s office.”

During those formative years, I also had the privilege of spending time with the Indigenous people who worked on the farm. Their deep connection to the land and their intuitive farming and cooking practices left a lasting impression on me. Watching them honor the gifts of Mother Earth awakened a holistic lifestyle within me—one that values food as medicine and honours nature’s rhythm.

My Baking Journey

So, I turned to my kitchen and got creative.

Through experimentation and love, I’ve successfully recreated baked treats that are flavorful, nourishing, and light—free from excessive sugar and artificial ingredients. My cakes are “naked”—I choose not to frost them, because I view sugar as one of the enemies of gut health. Now, I’m excited to share these guilt-free delights with you, so you can enjoy your dessert without compromise.

As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and practicing vegan/vegetarian, I’ve faced the challenge of finding baked goods that are both healthy and deeply satisfying to my exotic taste buds. Most store-bought options were either too sweet, too dense, or lacking in nutritional value.
